Checkpoint set on 300 West

From the Deseret Morning News | Checkpoint set on 300 West:
Salt Lake police plan on holding another court-approved administrative checkpoint Friday.
Between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Saturday, all vehicles traveling on 300 West between 1050 South and 1300 South will be pulled over to check for valid drivers' licenses and registrations and to check for possible DUI's and other violations.
Clearly the SLC police dept. is targeting the gay bar Todd's Bar & Grill, which is located right at 1051 So. 300 West, with this "court-approved administrative checkpoint." The article mentions another checkpoint last month. It makes one wonder where that one was. The article doesn't state the location of the last checkpoint. Why are the police targeting Todd's?

Trust me. I've been there. It's very, very gay. I know the owners who are VERY GAY. Most of the clientele is gay, although sometimes straight people go there, too.

That's also a block south of Trails, which probably doesn't interest many gay men, you know, what with the pasties and the boobs and all.

But to go to Trails, you don't have to actually go through the checkpoint to get there, like you do to go to Todd's.

Police have very funny targeting procedures. There was a time in the near past any event with S&M, spanking, vinyl, etc, would be the target of a police raid. I guess they knew the lines between what was 'legal' and what wasn't were pretty fuzzy, which could often make for an easy ticket and fines for the city. "JUSTIFY MY JOB."

But even if nothing illegal was going down, often they would just make something up and fine the owner of the venue, which constitutes harassment as much as anything else. I was present at a City Weekly-sponsored event and watched it all happen.

Could it be something seemingly unpopular, fringe, or misunderstood by the general public gets generalized, lumped together, profiled, targeted by police? LOL

And... not to be contrary, but... I know the owners of Todd's are gay, but their general customer base is pretty mixed - sort of a SLUG-kid hangout. (Is Saturday their gay night, though?)

If police were targeting gays, wouldn't they be setting up roadblocks on 400 S 500 W? Or 300 S 600 W?

Just a thought. ;)

Very interesting to hear about this though - where did you find out?

Uhh... it mentions right at the beginning of the post that this news item came from the Deseret Morning News.

Todd's used to have a very mixed clientele, but over the past couple of years it has become much more gay every night of the week to the point that the majority of patrons are gay, not just on their official gay night.
